The European Union and Mexico have successfully concluded negotiations to modernize their existing Global Agreement, following political engagement between Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič and Mexican Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard.
This modernized agreement aims to deepen and broaden the EU-Mexico partnership, fostering stronger political dialogue, enhanced economic cooperation, and a shared commitment to sustainable development. The agreement will create new economic opportunities for both sides, particularly for EU agri-food exports to the Mexican market.
A key focus of the modernized agreement is to promote shared values and address global challenges. It includes provisions to tackle corruption, protect human rights, and strengthen multilateralism. Furthermore, the agreement facilitates strategic cooperation on critical issues such as de-risking supply chains, securing sustainable access to critical raw materials, and addressing climate change.
This comprehensive framework will support the competitiveness of businesses on both sides, while advancing the shared goal of achieving a net-zero economy. The agreement also seeks to reinforce engagement on sustainable development, combat transnational organized crime, address migration challenges, and promote gender equality.
President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed her enthusiasm for this landmark achievement, stating: “The EU and Mexico are already trusted partners. Now, we want to deepen our cooperation even further, strongly benefiting our people and economies. EU exporters will gain new commercial opportunities, including our farmers and agri-food companies. This landmark deal proves that open, rules-based trade can deliver for our prosperity, economic security, and climate action and sustainable development. I look forward to working with President Sheinbaum to deliver on the promise of this Agreement.”
This modernized agreement signifies a significant step forward in the EU-Mexico partnership, fostering stronger ties and promoting shared prosperity for both regions.
