Belgium Commits €30 Million in Core Funding to UNDP projects for 2025–2028

The Government of Belgium has announced a multiannual contribution of €30 million to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) core resources for the period 2025–2028, reaffirming its position as one of UNDP’s top 20 core donors.

Core funding is a flexible form of financing that enables UNDP to respond rapidly to crises while also planning and delivering long-term development programmes. In an official letter to UNDP, Belgium’s Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs stated that “Belgium acknowledges that core voluntary contributions are indispensable for enabling UNDP to carry out its mandate effectively and flexibly, safeguard its normative functions, and contribute to the 2030 Agenda in a coherent, coordinated, and sustainable manner.”

The renewed commitment comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty. Economic, political, environmental, social, and technological pressures are converging at unprecedented speed, testing global resilience. After three decades of progress, human development is showing signs of fragility and stagnation, as highlighted in the 2025 Human Development Report.

Belgium’s contribution will play a key role in supporting the implementation of UNDP’s new Strategic Plan for 2026–2029, which focuses on advancing human development through effective governance, strengthened crisis resilience, and action on planetary pressures.

Belgium has been a long-standing partner of UNDP, supporting efforts to reduce poverty and inequality, strengthen resilience to shocks and crises, improve transparency in national climate commitments through the Climate Promise, and combat gender-based violence. In recent years, Belgian support has helped UNDP rebuild Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and clear landmines, deliver emergency healthcare and solid waste services in Gaza, and conserve Burundi’s largest and most biodiverse national parks.

This renewed core funding ensures that Belgium’s partnership with UNDP continues to deliver impact across fragile and least developed countries, while supporting innovative and scalable solutions for sustainable development worldwide.
