The Government of Fiji has officially commenced work on the Veikoba Subdivision, a major housing initiative aimed at expanding access to affordable and sustainable homes. The milestone was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Nalumisa.
The event brought together senior government officials, landowners, project partners, and representatives from the Ministry of Housing, the Public Rental Board, and China Railway First Group (CRFG) – the project’s contracted developer.
In his address, Minister Nalumisa reaffirmed the Government’s ongoing dedication to ensuring all Fijians have access to safe and affordable housing.
“The Veikoba Subdivision is another tangible step toward that goal. It will create opportunities for families to own their first home while supporting the continued growth of Nasinu as one of Fiji’s key urban centres,” said Hon. Nalumisa.
“When we invest in housing, we invest in our people – their dignity, wellbeing, and future. Every home built represents stability for a family, a safe place for children to grow, and an anchor for community development.”
A Major Investment in Affordable Housing
Situated about 1.5 kilometres from the Nasinu Town Centre, the Veikoba Residential Subdivision covers 118.8 acres acquired by the Housing Authority of Fiji for $1.04 million, with an annual lease of $10,700.
The project will deliver 640 serviced residential lots featuring single-storey row homes, with plans for two- and three-bedroom design-and-build options. Each lot will be equipped with essential utilities, including roads, water, and electricity, to create a well-connected, livable community.
Collaboration Across Agencies
Minister Nalumisa acknowledged the collaboration between government agencies and local partners – including the Water Authority of Fiji, Fiji Roads Authority, Energy Fiji Limited, the Nasinu Town Council/Suva Rural Local Authority, and the Ministry of Local Government – for their roles in advancing the development.
He also extended appreciation to the landowners of Veikoba, the Mataqali Naulukaroa, for making the land available, and to CRFG for its technical expertise.
The development is expected to ease housing pressures in the Suva-Nasinu corridor while generating employment and opportunities for local contractors and suppliers during construction.
Building Communities and Hope
Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer Mr. Isikeli Navuda expressed gratitude to all partners and stakeholders, emphasizing the broader social impact of the initiative.
“This project is not just about land development – it’s about building communities and providing hope for families who dream of owning a home. As we break ground today, we also break new ground in our journey towards inclusive and sustainable housing development in Fiji,” Mr Navuda said.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of a transformative housing project that aims to foster growth, opportunity, and hope for future residents.
As Minister Nalumisa concluded, “Together, we are building not just houses, but communities – and ultimately, a stronger Fiji.”
