The Port of Walvis Bay in Namibia has undergone a significant transformation, solidifying its position as a leading maritime hub in Southern Africa. The newly expanded terminal, completed in 2019, is now fully operational, enhancing the nation’s capacity to handle freight and strengthen its role within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The expansion project, which involved the reclamation of 40 hectares of land from the ocean, represents a major investment of approximately £240 million. The African Development Bank played a crucial role in supporting this development, providing a significant loan of ZAR 2,982 million, accounting for over 70% of the total funding.
This state-of-the-art facility is equipped to handle increased cargo volumes and meet the growing demands of regional trade. The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the port, further solidifying its position as a key gateway for trade and economic growth in Southern Africa.
This development marks a significant milestone for Namibia, demonstrating the country’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and enhancing its economic competitiveness within the region.
