OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle today announced the launch of “Stargate,” an ambitious initiate to build a vast AI infrastructure network across the United States. Unveiled at the White House, the project has been described as the “largest AI infrastructure project in history.”
The partnership will invest an initial $100 billion, with plans to scale up to $500 billion in the coming years, to develop and deploy cutting-edge AI infrastructure, including a nationwide network of high-performance data centers. Construction is already underway on the first 1-million-square-foot data center in Texas, spearheaded by Oracle.
“Stargate will secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate massive economic benefits for the world,” said OpenAI in a statement.
This collaborative effort aims to address the critical need for advanced AI infrastructure in the United States. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been a vocal advocate for bolstering AI infrastructure investment to maintain U.S. competitiveness in the global AI race.
“Infrastructure in the United States is critical,” Altman stated. “AI requires massive amounts of infrastructure, power, and chips, and we need to build that here to lead globally in this technology.”
Oracle, a leading data center operator, will play a key role in the development and management of the Stargate infrastructure. SoftBank, known for its significant investments in technology companies, will provide crucial financial backing.
The Stargate project aligns with OpenAI’s recent policy white paper, which emphasized the need for substantial U.S. investment in AI infrastructure to foster economic growth, create jobs, and ensure national security.
“This initiative will not only advance AI innovation but also re-industrialize the United States and strengthen national security,” said Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison.
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son will serve as Stargate’s chairman, overseeing the project’s execution.
The first phase of the Stargate project is expected to be completed in the coming years, with plans to expand the network nationwide.
