SYSTRA Canada Supports Design and Safety Oversight for Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown West Extension

Toronto’s transit network is set to expand further, with SYSTRA Canada contributing to the design and delivery of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, a major light rail transit project led by Metrolinx.

The Ontario provincial agency, alongside Infrastructure Ontario, has launched the extension of Line 5 Eglinton, which will run an additional 9.2 kilometres west from Mount Dennis into neighbouring Mississauga, with the potential for a further 4.7-kilometre link to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Four major contracts have been awarded for the project, covering two tunnel sections, an elevated guideway section, and systems, rail, and stations (SRS). As a subcontractor to Trillium Rail Partners (TRP), SYSTRA Canada is responsible for Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance oversight, ensuring the quality and robustness of technical SRS design deliverables.

The extension is designed to significantly improve regional connectivity, linking with five other transport networks, including the UP Express, the Kitchener GO Train line, and multiple bus services operated by GO Transit, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), and MiWay in Mississauga.

Once completed, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is expected to include up to 10 stations and carry as many as 69,700 passengers per day. The project builds on SYSTRA Canada’s established experience in light rail and tramway systems, following its involvement in projects in Gatineau–Ottawa and Quebec City.
