The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has announced the inauguration of the West Coast Road project on Mahé Island in the Republic of Seychelles. Financed with AED 86.6 million (USD 23.6 million), the project forms part of ADFD’s ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable infrastructure that strengthens long-term social and economic development in partner countries.
The rehabilitation and expansion of the West Coast Road mark a significant upgrade to one of Seychelles’ key coastal transport arteries. The improved route enhances traffic flow, supports the movement of people and goods, and plays a vital role in bolstering the country’s trade and tourism sectors. It also generates employment opportunities for local communities and contributes to building a more resilient and sustainable economy.
His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, said the inauguration reflects the Fund’s commitment to advancing the UAE’s vision of fostering global partnerships that support inclusive, sustainable growth.
“The West Coast Road project reinforces ADFD’s strategic approach to supporting infrastructure development across Africa and other regions,” said Al Suwaidi. “Through impactful investments, the Fund continues to empower nations to achieve their development goals, enhance economic competitiveness, and improve the quality of life of communities worldwide.”
Spanning 17 kilometres along Mahé Island’s western coastline, the project involved widening the road to seven metres, adding 1.5-metre margins on both sides, and constructing new service bays. Additional works included the installation of modern rainwater drainage systems, steel and concrete barriers, smart lighting, and upgraded traffic management infrastructure to improve safety and transport efficiency.
ADFD’s partnership with Seychelles dates back to 1979. To date, the Fund has supported 13 development projects worth approximately AED 517 million, spanning key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, housing and healthcare. These investments continue to contribute to Seychelles’ sustainable development goals and long-term socioeconomic stability.
