UAE-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power has initiated construction of a 50MW solar power plant in Gontougo, northeastern Ivory Coast. The project, being developed by AMEA Gontougo, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMEA Power, is financed by Dutch investor FMO and German investor DEG, who have committed a total of US$60 million.
The Bondoukou solar plant is expected to be commissioned later this year, marking a significant milestone in Ivory Coast’s renewable energy sector. “The 50MW solar plant is a landmark achievement for Ivory Coast and a testament to AMEA Power’s dedication to delivering clean energy solutions across Africa,” stated Hussain Al Nowais, AMEA Power Chairman, at the groundbreaking ceremony. “This groundbreaking ceremony is an important symbol of partnership, we are proud to partner with the government and the people of Ivory Coast on this transformative journey.”
This project represents AMEA Power’s inaugural venture in Ivory Coast, contributing to the nation’s rapid expansion of solar energy capacity. The country has witnessed a substantial increase in solar capacity, escalating from 13MW in 2021 to 46MW by the end of 2023, as part of its strategy to achieve 45% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030.
AMEA Power also has a second 50MW solar project in “advanced development” within the country, highlighting its commitment to supporting Ivory Coast’s renewable energy goals. With natural gas currently dominating the nation’s electricity generation, these solar projects are crucial for diversifying the energy mix and achieving the government’s ambitious renewable energy targets.
