Inpex Masela, a subsidiary of Japan’s Inpex Corporation, has selected a virtual simulator developed by Twinn, an affiliate of Royal HaskoningDHV, to optimize the development and operation of its Abadi LNG project in Indonesia.
The Witness LNG Logistics Simulator will enable Inpex to de-risk terminal operations and commercial strategies by providing a comprehensive understanding of the complex LNG value chain. This advanced simulation tool utilizes predictive technology to model various operational scenarios, considering factors such as weather conditions, equipment failures, and scheduling fluctuations.

By creating a virtual model of the entire Inpex value chain, including onshore development, terminal operations, and shipping, the simulator will help Inpex assess critical aspects such as storage capacity, berth availability, and customer contract development.
With global LNG demand projected to increase significantly in the coming decades, the ability to stress-test various development options and understand the technical and commercial implications of different decisions is crucial for LNG suppliers.
The Abadi LNG project, located offshore East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is expected to produce approximately 9.5 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, along with condensate and natural gas. Inpex holds a 65% stake in the project, with Pertamina and Petronas holding 20% and 15% stakes respectively.
Following the approval of the revised development plan in December 2023, which incorporates a carbon capture and storage (CCS) component, the Abadi LNG project is poised to play a significant role in Indonesia’s energy future.
In addition to its involvement in the Abadi LNG project, Inpex recently expanded its presence in Southeast Asia by acquiring a 42.5% participating interest in a production sharing contract (PSC) off the coast of Malaysia.
