A consortium of leading European research institutions, companies, and high-performance computing centers has launched OpenEuroLLM, an ambitious project aimed at developing cutting-edge open-source language models. This initiative seeks to counter the growing dominance of US and Chinese AI giants, while simultaneously fostering a thriving AI ecosystem within Europe.
Led by renowned computational linguist Jan Hajič from Charles University and Peter Sarlin, co-founder of Silo AI (recently acquired by AMD), OpenEuroLLM brings together a diverse group of European AI leaders, including Aleph Alpha, CSC – home to one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers – and Lights On, Europe’s first publicly-traded generative AI company.
Backed by the European Commission and the STEP initiative, which aims to boost investment in strategic technologies, OpenEuroLLM has secured significant funding and computational resources. This ambitious project prioritizes the development of open-source LLMs that can be freely utilized by businesses, industries, and public services across the continent.
