AECOM has been appointed by Sound Transit to deliver design, environmental and project and construction management services under three multiple-award task order contracts, supporting the next phase of transit expansion across the Seattle region.
The five-year Design MATOC sees AECOM acting as prime consultant, leading civil and structural engineering from preliminary engineering through to full design development. Across the wider programme, Sound Transit has awarded 19 MATOCs expected to generate around $1 billion in engineering services, covering new facilities, upgrades and state-of-good-repair works for light rail, commuter rail and bus networks.
From a programme management perspective, the MATOC structure provides flexibility and scalability. Rather than procuring services project by project, Sound Transit can issue task orders under pre-qualified frameworks, accelerating mobilisation and enabling coordinated delivery across a portfolio of capital and renewal schemes.
In addition to its prime design role, AECOM will support the Environmental MATOC as a subconsultant, delivering planning studies, environmental assessments and clearance activities. The firm will also contribute to the PMCM MATOC, providing project and construction management oversight for major capital expansions and enhancement programmes.
This integrated role across design, environmental compliance and PMCM positions AECOM within the full project lifecycle. Such continuity can strengthen risk management, improve constructability input at earlier stages and enhance alignment between planning approvals and delivery execution.
For Sound Transit, which is progressing large-scale system expansion to increase capacity and accessibility, the contracts underpin a long-term, portfolio-based approach to infrastructure development. For AECOM, the appointments reinforce its presence in complex, multidisciplinary transit programmes where coordination, governance and delivery assurance are critical to achieving schedule and performance objectives.
