The Federal Government of Germany has renewed its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), reaffirming its commitment to supporting sustainable development worldwide. As part of this renewed cooperation, Germany has also continued its support for UNDP’s Accelerator Labs, enabling the successful completion and scaling-up of the organisation’s flagship innovation programme.
The announcement comes as UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo, only weeks into his mandate, begins a visit to key partners in Berlin to thank Germany for its longstanding and consistent support. The renewed partnership arrives at a critical moment, as countries around the world face converging challenges including health emergencies, climate change, conflict, and natural disasters.
Germany’s contribution will strengthen UNDP’s ability to respond rapidly to crises, protect lives and livelihoods, and safeguard development gains that have been achieved over decades. Aligned with UNDP’s new Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2029, the funding will support integrated and scalable solutions that advance human development while protecting the planet.
A central feature of Germany’s support is its provision of flexible core funding, which allows UNDP to adapt quickly to evolving crises and direct assistance where it is most urgently needed. This approach is particularly critical for vulnerable groups, including women and girls, who are often disproportionately affected during emergencies. Core funding enables UNDP to maintain operations and protect development outcomes in fragile and conflict-affected settings such as Ukraine, Gaza, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Haiti.
Core resources also allow UNDP to act as a multiplier of development finance. In 2024, the organisation mobilised $7.4 in additional resources for every dollar of core funding received, significantly expanding the reach and impact of its programmes across more than 170 countries and territories. In addition, core funding underpins UNDP’s oversight, accountability, and transparency systems, helping ensure that programmes are delivered effectively and responsibly. UNDP continues to be ranked among the most transparent international organisations.
Germany’s renewed contribution underscores its strong commitment to multilateralism and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as its belief in international cooperation as a foundation for addressing global challenges. UNDP has welcomed the continued collaboration, highlighting the shared objective of building a more equitable, resilient, and prosperous world in which no one is left behind.
