Association for Project Management (APM) has announced a major pilot programme to take place in 2026, testing a new assessment model for Chartered Project Professional (ChPP). Subject to successful evaluation, the assessment will become mandatory for all future ChPP applicants from 2027.
APM is now inviting project professionals to register their interest in taking part.
The pilot assessment will test candidates through two distinct components:
- A 1.5-hour written examination assessing technical knowledge
- A professional assessment consisting of a 35-minute presentation followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session, focused on professional practice, ethics, compliance and professionalism
All elements will be delivered online, ensuring accessibility for project professionals regardless of location or mobility.
The new assessment construct has been developed using insights from across the profession, input from assessment specialists and extensive candidate feedback. Its design responds directly to what candidates value most, including face-to-face assessment elements and the opportunity to reflect on professional learning and achievements.
The pilot also introduces additional benefits aimed at levelling the playing field for applicants. These include clearer guidance, greater transparency and a more intuitive journey for candidates who may not have access to structured development programmes.
The scope of the pilot is limited strictly to the assessment construct. The ChPP standard, pathways and competence framework will remain unchanged, and the pilot will not affect candidates who already have applications in progress.
Further details are available on APM’s campaign website.
Commenting on the launch, Emily Long, Head of Professional Standards at APM, said:
“Respondents to our research were clear about the importance of a chartered standard that is both rigorous and challenging, reflecting those operating at the highest levels of professional practice.
“This new assessment construct leaves no doubt that the bar set in 2016 remains exactly where it is. It preserves the integrity of the standard in the face of growing AI capability, while ensuring that those who meet it through their own merit have the clarity, guidance and confidence to succeed, regardless of background.
“What better way to start 2026 than by achieving ChPP status and supporting the future of your profession? If you can, join us and be part of our most influential pilot to date.”
