Hive Hydrogen South Africa, a joint venture between global green energy firm Hive Energy and investment and development firm BuiltAfrica Group, has officially launched its request for proposals (RFP) for the development of the $5.8 billion Coega Green Ammonia project in the Eastern Cape province. This critical step moves the ambitious project closer to its planned 2029 production start.
Located near Gqeberha, the Coega Green Ammonia facility is designed to produce over one million tons of green ammonia annually. This production will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources, specifically a substantial 1,430 MW solar PV cluster and 1,879 MW of wind power, underscoring the project’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
The comprehensive project scope includes vital infrastructure such as seawater abstraction, desalination, and demineralization facilities. It will also feature storage capabilities for 70,000 tons of green ammonia and two 7km pipelines for efficient product transport.
Hive Hydrogen South Africa anticipates making a final investment decision in Q3 2026. To date, 15 engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms have been pre-qualified and shortlisted to bid on various aspects of the project. The green ammonia produced at the Coega facility is primarily targeted for export markets, with a focus on key demand regions such as Japan and South Korea.
This project represents a significant investment in South Africa’s renewable energy sector and its potential to become a global player in green hydrogen derivatives.
