African Development Fund Approves $43.6 Million for Major Mozambique Transmission Line

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group has approved $43.6 million in financing for a critical transmission line project in Mozambique. This investment will facilitate the transfer of 120 MW of clean wind energy from the future Namaacha Wind Farm to homes and businesses across Mozambique and the broader Southern Africa region.

The funding package includes $33.2 million from the African Development Fund and an additional $10.4 million from its Climate Action Window, a dedicated fund supporting climate-resilient infrastructure in low-income African nations. The Government of Mozambique is also contributing to the project, highlighting a strong public-private partnership.

“This project marks a significant stride in Mozambique’s shift towards a low-carbon energy future,” stated Kevin Kariuki, the Bank Group’s Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate, and Green Growth. “It will provide affordable electricity, bolster local industry, and improve livelihoods.”

Electricidade de Moçambique, Mozambique’s national power utility, will implement the project alongside Central Eléctrica da Namaacha (CEN), a private sector-led development involving Globeleq Africa Limited and Source Energia. The scope includes constructing two 43-kilometer, 66-kilovolt transmission lines and upgrading existing network infrastructure.

Upon completion, the project is expected to connect thousands of rural and underserved communities to electricity, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 71,000 tons annually, and strengthen regional energy trade within the Southern African Power Pool.

This initiative aligns with the African Development Bank’s strategic priority to “Light Up and Power Africa” and supports Mozambique’s national goal of achieving universal electrification by 2030 under the Mission 300 initiative.
