Recent high-level engagements between leaders of Binh Duong province and prominent foreign technology corporations highlight a strategic shift towards prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and the digital economy as key drivers for sustainable growth in the southern Vietnamese province.
On June 13, Ryan Sim, AMD’s Regional Director for Asia-Pacific and Japan, met with provincial authorities, expressing significant interest in potential collaborations. AMD, a global leader in high-performance processors and AI accelerators, sees opportunities in high-tech industries, human resource training, and the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem within Binh Duong. This growing interest from a major U.S.-based conglomerate underscores Binh Duong’s increasing importance within global technology value chains.
Vietnam is emerging as an attractive destination amidst the restructuring of the global semiconductor supply chain, attributed to its strategic location, political stability, and open economic policies. Binh Duong, in particular, distinguishes itself through its integrated industrial infrastructure, adaptable regulatory mechanisms, and forward-thinking governance. As of mid-June, the province has drawn over 4,500 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects from 65 countries and territories, totaling over $42.7 billion in registered capital. While U.S. investments currently stand at 138 projects valued at nearly $1.4 billion, there’s substantial room for deeper collaboration, especially in core technology sectors.
In a separate meeting, Su Liang, Chairman of MiTAC, a multinational technology firm headquartered in Taiwan with extensive experience in core technology development and systems integration, commended Binh Duong’s smart city ambitions. MiTAC expressed interest in concrete projects such as urban rail systems, smart lighting, and AI-powered city surveillance, noting the strong alignment between MiTAC’s solutions and the province’s digital transformation goals.
Bui Minh Tri, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, reaffirmed Binh Duong’s commitment to facilitating project implementation, particularly in sectors poised to transform the local growth model.
Bui Thanh Nhan, head of the provincial Party Committee’s Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation, emphasized that these meetings signal a refined investment attraction strategy. This new approach moves away from a fragmented, quantity-driven focus, instead prioritizing high value-added, environmentally friendly, and knowledge-intensive industries.
Over the past three decades, Binh Duong has cemented its status as one of Vietnam’s most dynamic industrial hubs, boasting a strong foundation in manufacturing, exports, and investment. The province currently operates 30 industrial parks spanning over 13,000 hectares, with an occupancy rate exceeding 90%. Looking ahead, Binh Duong’s development plan through 2030, with a vision to 2050, aims to establish approximately 10 new industrial parks, with a strong emphasis on high-tech and eco-friendly models.
