National Gas has been recognized with the prestigious Project of the Year Award at the Global Tech & AI Awards 2025 for its successful completion of a complex and transformative Technology Separation Project. The award, presented at a ceremony held on May 14th in London, celebrates groundbreaking projects that deliver innovative solutions and measurable impact.
The winning project involved the intricate separation of National Gas’s entire IT ecosystem from National Grid, following the formation of the new entity responsible for Britain’s critical gas infrastructure. Commencing in January 2023, the cloud-first initiative aimed to establish a fully independent, secure, and future-ready IT environment, ensuring zero disruption to the transmission of gas to 28 million homes and 30,000 industrial users.
Leveraging a cloud-native architecture incorporating Google Cloud, Microsoft 365, and ServiceNow, National Gas successfully migrated nearly 300 cloud and on-premise systems, including SAP, CRM, and asset management tools, without any downtime or data loss. The project also included a significant upgrade to cybersecurity capabilities with the implementation of a Splunk SIEM and alignment to the Cyber Assessment Framework. Notably, legacy systems dating back to the 1980s were replaced with cutting-edge platforms like Maximo.
Darren Curly, CTO at National Gas, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Winning the Project of the Year Award feels fantastic. Our team has worked incredibly hard for a long time to deliver this project, and it’s truly rewarding to be recognized for our dedication and the successful outcome we achieved.”
To ensure the project’s timely and on-budget delivery, National Gas strategically scaled its IT team, established a Security Maturity Curve, and implemented a bespoke Separation Management Office to orchestrate blended workstreams. Simultaneously, the company introduced operational enhancements, including digital asset management, GIS separation, and a refreshed SAP ecosystem, all while preparing for future hydrogen integration and long-term net-zero goals.
The successful completion of this high-stakes program has equipped National Gas with a resilient and scalable digital infrastructure. The company has also achieved Basic CAF compliance, positioning it as a benchmark in both cloud transformation and energy sector innovation within the UK.
The Global Tech & AI Awards spotlight organizations and individuals redefining the technology landscape, recognizing technical excellence, strategic impact, customer value, and ethical application. National Gas’s Project of the Year win underscores its commitment to innovation and its successful navigation of a highly complex technological undertaking.
