Government Approval Propels Peterborough Station Quarter Regeneration Forward

A significant milestone has been reached in the regeneration of Peterborough railway station and its surrounding area, known as Station Quarter, with the UK Government’s approval of the Full Business Case.

This crucial approval unlocks £47.8 million in funding, contingent upon the Government’s forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review, paving the way for construction on the first phase of works, ‘City Link’, to commence in late autumn this year.

The Station Quarter project, a collaborative effort between the Combined Authority, Peterborough City Council, London North Eastern Railway (LNER), and Network Rail, is a cornerstone of strategic plans to enhance the city’s transport infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and create more appealing public spaces. The Full Business Case for the ambitious proposals was submitted in March of this year.

The initial ‘City Link’ phase will deliver a more direct, safer, and welcoming pedestrian and cyclist route connecting the railway station with the city centre, replacing the existing Cowgate underpass.

The broader Peterborough Station Quarter project encompasses the creation of a new western entrance to the station, the development of a multi-storey car park on the station’s west side, and the refurbishment of station buildings on the eastern side. Plans also include the creation of new public spaces for gathering and leisure, improved street design and landscaping, and the implementation of measures to mitigate flood risks.

Future phases of the regeneration project are strategically planned to unlock land for the development of new homes, job creation opportunities, and commercial spaces, replacing some existing surface-level car parking with high-quality, mixed-use developments.

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, commented: “Securing Government approval for the business case is a fantastic achievement for Peterborough, representing a generational opportunity to revitalise a key area of the city with significant potential. Subject to the Comprehensive Spending Review, we are now focused on commencing construction on the ‘City Link’ phase later this autumn.”

Councillor Nick Thulbourn, Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration at Peterborough City Council, added: “The approval of the Station Quarter project marks a monumental step forward for Peterborough. This transformative project will establish the station area as a vibrant gateway to our city, significantly enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. We anticipate the positive impact this development will have on Peterborough.”
