DGIST Secures Government Funding to Establish Graduate School for Technical Management Talent Development

The Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) and Daegu City have announced their successful selection for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s “2025 Global Advanced Strategic Industrial Technology Management Professional Training Project.” This achievement will see DGIST receive 2.5 billion won in state funding over five years (2025-2029), complemented by a 500 million won contribution from Daegu City.

The funding will enable DGIST to cultivate approximately 90 master’s and doctoral-level talents annually, totaling 300 individuals, who possess a strong combination of engineering and management expertise. This initiative is expected to stimulate industry-academic cooperation projects within high-tech sectors strategic to Daegu City, such as robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

To effectively execute this project, DGIST is actively pursuing the establishment of a dedicated “Graduate School of Technology Management,” with a target opening in the first half of 2026. Preparations will commence in the first half of 2025 with the formation of an establishment promotion team, aiming for student recruitment in September and official launch in March 2026.

The DGIST Graduate School of Technology Management will feature a practical curriculum specializing in AI and robotics. It will be modeled after MIT’s “Leaders for Global Operations” program, integrating a convergent education approach encompassing both technology and management disciplines. The curriculum will include core courses in engineering technology, global management, and technology commercialization in the first year, followed by customized courses in high-tech industries like AI and robotics in the second year to enhance practical skills. Furthermore, collaborations with global companies and overseas universities, including MIT, will facilitate joint research and industry-academia cooperation projects to cultivate internationally competitive technology management professionals.

Jeong Jae-seok, Director of Daegu City University Policy Bureau, stated, “DGIST’s selection for this project marks a significant milestone for Daegu Metropolitan City’s growth into a high-tech strategic industry hub. We will continue to collaborate with local universities to provide support for cultivating global-level technology management key talents.”
