Penspen, a global energy consultancy, has secured a contract to revalidate and update the feasibility study for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), a significant infrastructure project poised to reshape Africa’s energy landscape and enhance global energy security. The TSGP, spanning over 4,000 kilometers from Nigeria to Algeria, is jointly sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd, SONATRACH (Algeria), and SONIDEP SA (Niger).
The pipeline aims to transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually across West and North Africa, ultimately connecting to European markets. This ambitious project is expected to unlock substantial economic opportunities for transit countries, promote regional cooperation, and address Africa’s growing energy demand.
Arun Behl, Penspen’s Sales & Marketing Director (Middle East & Africa), stated, “This award underscores Penspen’s expertise in large-scale energy infrastructure development and our commitment to strategic initiatives that drive economic growth and regional stability. We are proud to support this transformative project, leveraging our extensive experience in cross-country pipeline engineering.”
Penspen, which conducted the original feasibility study in 2006, has been tasked with revalidating and updating the study, considering previous route options. This comprehensive study, executed from Penspen’s UK and Middle East offices with support from Sidara brand Dar, will include regional gas market analysis, environmental and social evaluations, economic and financial assessments, legislative reviews, risk analysis, and the development of a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) scope of work.
The TSGP aims to leverage Nigeria’s vast gas reserves, contributing to Africa’s energy independence and diversifying Europe’s energy sources. This project aligns with efforts to reduce reliance on single-source energy suppliers, enhancing resilience against supply disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties. Beyond energy security, the TSGP is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation and infrastructure development, fostering regional collaboration and reinforcing Africa’s role in the global energy transition.
Penspen has a strong track record of delivering strategic energy infrastructure projects in Africa, including studies for large-diameter cross-country pipelines and the FEED for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP). This new contract further solidifies Penspen’s position as a key player in the development of critical energy infrastructure across the continent.
