South African independent power producer, Mulilo Energy Holdings Pty, has announced the successful financial close of its 75-MWac/105-MWdc Du Plessis Dam Solar PV2 project in the Northern Cape province. This milestone marks a significant step forward for renewable energy development in South Africa.
The project, developed in partnership with domestic renewables investor H1 Capital, is notable for being one of the first in the country to achieve financial close under an energy aggregator model. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Located near De Aar, the Du Plessis Dam Solar PV2 park is projected to generate approximately 248 GWh of electricity annually. The power will be delivered to the national grid via the Kestrel Main transmission substation, developed by Mulilo, under an off-take agreement with South African energy trader Etana.
This development builds on Mulilo’s strong track record in the renewable energy sector. The company, which already operates over 420 MW of wind and solar capacity, achieved financial close on 660 MW of new renewable energy projects last year. Notably, in late 2024, Mulilo secured financing for another 75-MW solar park in the Northern Cape to supply Air Products’ local air separation units.
The Du Plessis Dam Solar PV2 project underscores Mulilo’s commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity in South Africa and contributing to the country’s energy transition.
