£3 Million Funding for Inclusive Clean Energy Transition Project in Africa

Sheffield Hallam University is playing a key role in a new £3 million project funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the Ayrton Challenge programme. The project, titled “Mainstreaming Gender Equality and Social Inclusion for a Just Energy Transition in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania” (JustGESI), aims to ensure a more equitable and inclusive transition to clean energy in four African countries.

Led by a consortium of UK universities, JustGESI will focus on bridging skills gaps and empowering women and underprivileged groups to actively participate in the clean energy sector. Dr. Mulualem Gebreslassie, Associate Professor of Energy and Transforming Lives Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University, will co-lead the project and play a crucial role in coordinating capacity building efforts.

“I am thrilled to be part of this interdisciplinary group and to contribute to empowering female engineers and underprivileged groups to drive a just and sustainable energy transition in Africa,” said Dr. Gebreslassie.

Sheffield Hallam University will play a key role in identifying gender equality and social inclusion gaps within the existing energy education sectors in the partner countries. The university will then develop and deliver tailored training modules to address these gaps, empowering up to 270 female technicians and engineers with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the clean energy transition.

This project exemplifies Sheffield Hallam University’s commitment to addressing global challenges and contributing to a more equitable and sustainable future.
