Liverpool Waters, a significant regeneration project in the heart of Liverpool, has received a major boost with a £56 million investment from Homes England. This funding will accelerate the transformation of the city’s historic northern docklands, creating a vibrant new neighbourhood.
The investment will support the development of Central Docks, the largest of the five neighborhoods within the Liverpool Waters district. This area is set to undergo a major transformation, with the creation of approximately 2,350 new homes, a new public park, and vital infrastructure.
The project aligns with the UK government’s ambitious plans to build 1.5 million new homes across the country. By investing in brownfield sites like Central Docks, the government aims to revitalize urban areas and create sustainable communities.
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:
“Britain is under new management and now we’re really starting to see the difference. Working hand in hand with government at a national, regional and local level we can make an enormous difference and drive growth locally. The development of Central Docks, alongside the ongoing work to regenerate Bramley Moore and Bootle, has the potential to be a catalyst for growth and wider regeneration for great swathes of South Sefton and North Liverpool, creating jobs and attracting investment. The Central Docks site was identified in the Liverpool Strategic Advisory Panel’s final report as a site for potential development. The £56m we’ve received is an enormous statement of intent – on top of the £31m we secured for the city back in March this year. I’m delighted that the Treasury has given us the go-ahead for this investment, which promises to be a really significant development for our city region.”
The Central Docks development is expected to attract over £550 million in private investment, contributing to the overall economic growth of Liverpool. The project will also create jobs and enhance the city’s waterfront, making it a more attractive destination for residents, businesses, and visitors.
With full planning approval for the site preparation work, the development will include a diverse mix of housing, commercial, retail, and leisure facilities. The centerpiece of the development will be a 2.1-hectare public park, offering green spaces, recreational facilities, and stunning views of the River Mersey.
By investing in infrastructure and creating new homes, the Central Docks project will help to revitalize the area and contribute to Liverpool’s ongoing regeneration.
