Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO), a subsidiary of NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI), today announced a major step forward in its transition to a cleaner and more reliable energy future with the completion of the Cavalry Solar project.
This 200-megawatt (MW) solar facility, located in White County, Indiana, is now operational and generating clean energy for homes and businesses. The project also includes an additional 45 MW of battery energy storage capability, showcasing NIPSCO’s commitment to incorporating cutting-edge technologies in its energy transition plan.
“The completion of Cavalry Solar, the third solar project in NIPSCO’s generating mix, is a crucial step in advancing our energy generation transition plan to provide sustainable, cost-effective and reliable energy now and into the future,” said Vince Parisi, NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer. “The inclusion of battery energy storage is an example of the advancing technology we’re incorporating into our energy transition to best meet the needs of our customers.”
Developed and constructed by NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, a global leader in renewable energy, Cavalry Solar is expected to generate enough clean energy to power approximately 60,000 homes. Additionally, the project is anticipated to bring in approximately $25 million in additional tax revenue to White County over its lifetime.

NIPSCO’s Commitment to Renewable Energy
Cavalry Solar joins a growing list of renewable energy projects in NIPSCO’s portfolio, including the Indiana Crossroads Solar and Dunns Bridge I Solar projects. Construction is also underway on the Dunns Bridge II Solar project, which will feature a significant battery storage component.
These projects, combined with NIPSCO’s existing wind farms, are already providing environmental and economic benefits. Notably, 100% of the excess power sales and renewable energy credit (REC) sales from these projects are returned to customers, resulting in nearly $80 million in savings since 2021.
Looking Ahead: A Continued Focus on Clean Energy
NIPSCO remains committed to a balanced and reliable generation portfolio, aiming to be coal-free by 2028 and achieve a carbon emissions reduction of more than 90% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
The company is currently finalizing its next Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) which will outline its long-term strategy for supplying electricity to its customers over the next 20 years. This plan, set to be published in November, will further solidify NIPSCO’s commitment to clean energy and a sustainable future for Indiana.
