Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat) and Huawei have successfully completed a large-scale core network consolidation project in Jakarta, serving hundreds of millions of Indonesian users. This significant milestone marks a culmination of extensive collaboration between the two companies and underscores Indosat’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement in mobile communications.
The project, which encompassed more than 100 million users, was completed within an impressive 14 months, setting a new industry benchmark. The consolidation has resulted in a substantial improvement in network experience for Indosat’s customers across Indonesia, particularly those in rural and remote areas. For example, residents of Kalimantan have reported a 15% increase in average downlink speed and an 11% reduction in average round trip time for Facebook usage.
Desmond Cheung, Director and Chief Technology Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, said: “We’re humbled to create another benchmark for the telecommunications industry. The core network consolidation project is a testament to our commitment to delivering a world-class digital experience to our customers. With the completion of this initiative, we believe we can consistently deliver a marvelous experience to our customers while paving the way towards our mission of connecting and empowering every Indonesian.”
George Gao, President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, said: “Thanks to our close and in-depth cooperation, we are very pleased to witness a great achievement in completing such a large-scale and complex network consolidation in a short period of time. Huawei will continuously support Indosat to enhance network connectivity, accelerate service innovation, and create industry value in digital transformation, achieving greater business success.”
The project’s success was attributed to the combined technological strengths, hard work, and dedication of both Indosat and Huawei teams. The teams meticulously analyzed and reviewed the network to determine the optimal solutions for consolidation, adhering to a “first-time-right” philosophy. Key performance indicators, user experience metrics, and detailed operational plans were established to ensure network stability, service continuity, and operational efficiency across 26 PS Core locations throughout Indonesia.
By adopting leading telco cloud-native technology, Indosat and Huawei commercialized both bare metal container and innovative dual-engine container solutions, supporting large-scale commercial use of 5G core networks. The dual-engine container solution leverages cutting-edge technologies to manage both virtual machines and containers in a unified infrastructure platform, enabling Indosat to seamlessly introduce containers through capacity expansion and significantly reduce time-to-market.
In the intelligent and digital era, Indosat has increased its focus on intelligence and ultra-experience. Indosat and Huawei collaborated to deploy future-proof core networks that can adapt to the 5G-A intelligent and hyper-distributed architecture, meeting current network needs and paving the way for introducing new 5G features and services for both consumer and business users.
