CARLEP Project Expands to Boost Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Bhutan

The National Maize Program, in collaboration with the Geog Agriculture Sector in Udzorong, has successfully expanded its community-based hybrid maize seed production initiative. The project, supported by the CARLEP-IFAD program, aims to enhance maize productivity and achieve self-sufficiency in Bhutan.

The project began in February 2024 with the production of WHM-1 hybrid maize seeds in Lamzang. Through capacity-building efforts and practical demonstrations, farmers were trained on essential agronomic practices.

A recent field day showcased the successful production of 320 kg of F1 hybrid seeds. Participants were impressed with the quality and yield of the WHM-1 hybrid and expressed interest in continuing seed production.

Building on this success, the National Maize Program plans to expand seed production in January 2025, providing farmers with necessary inputs and technical guidance.

The extension of the CARLEP-IFAD project by three years demonstrates the program’s effectiveness in supporting sustainable agriculture and improving food security in Bhutan.
